John Hoitsma

Chief John N. Hoitsma, better known as Jack, joined the Fair Lawn Fire Department in April of 1958 and became a full member in May of 1960. Chief Hoitsma served the town of Fair Lawn for 55 years as an active member of the Fair Lawn Fire Department.  

Jack served as Captain of Fire Company No. 1 in 1966, 1982, 1988, and 1990.  He also served as Chief of the Department in 1972 and 1992. He served in the capacity as both president and vice president for Fire Company No. 1. for ten years and he was also a Fire Inspector in Fair Lawn with the Fire Prevention Bureau.

He also volunteered on the Borough Planning Board for the town for two years.  Jack served as President of North West Bergen Mutual Aid Association for many years.   

Chief Hoitsma received a Life Saving Award when he and two fellow firefighters rescued a firefighter that fell through the roof at the National Community Bank located at Fair Lawn Avenue and River Road in June of 1980.
