Lightning Detection System
The Borough of Fair Lawn maintains a Lightning Detection System at our various parks and athletic fields throughout the town. The system is managed by the Recreation and Parks Department. The Lightning Detection System will alert everyone to the threat of lightning in the area. An effective lightning safety program is dependent on the cooperation of all field users (players, coaches, referees and spectators). The list of rules must be followed for your safety:
1. If the lightning detector siren sounds (one long tone) and the strobe light goes on this means to seek shelter immediately. Lightning has been detected in the 10 mile range. Enter your car or go indoors. Do not stand under trees or anywhere outdoors.
2. The strobe light will remain on after the siren. This means that lightning is still in the area and you are to remain indoors. If you arrive at the field and see the strobe light on this means the siren has sounded and lightning is in the area, return to your car. There will be a thirty (30) minute waiting period from the last strike of lightning before anyone can resume play. The thirty minute period will automatically reset each time there is an additional lightning strike.
3. When lightning detector horn sounds three consecutive blasts and the strobe light turns off that means it is safe to resume play. Again, do not return to the field until the strobe light turns off.
4. Violation of the rules is grounds for suspension or other penalties. All field users have an obligation to comply with the lightning detection system rules.
