Pools Facilities
Memorial Pool:
Memorial Pool is located at the end of Berdan Avenue along the Avenue of
Heroes in Fair Lawn's Memorial Park. This sand bottom pool is surrounded
by beach sand and includes back beach (grass) areas and shade trees.
Memorial Pool is 300 feet across and includes a kiddie swimming area,
slides, a raft and areas of depth from 0 to 14 feet. This fully supervised
facility also has one main bath house with restrooms and first aid, a
non-smoking area, a small snack stand and restroom area, 2 picnic grove
areas and a large concession stand with picnic tables.
Membership
Memberships include:
- Family $150.00 - parents and any school age children.
- Junior $55.00 - an individual child under age 16.
- Adult $75.00 - high school graduate or older or age 16 and out of
school.
- Senior $20.00 - individuals age 65 and older.
- Non-Swimmer FREE - individuals using beach, back beach or picnic areas.
*NO SWIMMING*.
- Resident Daily Pass: $10.00/day adult, $5.00/day child, 10 coupon
booklet $75.00
Non-Resident Memberships include:
- Family $325.00 - parents and any school age children
- Adult $160.00 - high school graduate or older or age 16 and out of
school.
- Senior $95.00 - individuals age 65 and older.

Programs, Activities,
Special Events, Swimming Lessons
Swimming Lessons: (30 minute class - $45,
45 minute class - $60)
Swimming lessons are divided into 30 and 45 minute classes depending on
age and ability. Each class (session) runs for 3 weeks (Monday through
Friday) and is offered 3 times throughout the year. Lessons are divided
into the following categories:
Mommy/Daddy and Me:
(ages 1-4) Foundation swimming (30 minutes) - overall this program is
designed for the parent/guardian and the child to be able to explore the
water in a fun-filled and exciting way. This class will provide a positive
experience and builds a solid foundation for future swimming skills. Areas
covered are supported back floating, bubble blowing, water walks, etc. The
adults will also be made aware of various aspects of water and pool
safety. Parental/guardian involvement is mandatory.
Beginners:
Confidence swimming (30 minutes) - areas covered in this class include:
breath holding, prone floating, back float, front flutter kick, back
flutter kick, front crawl stroke, rhythmic breathing, back crawl stroke,
elementary backstroke and review of all relevant pool rules and pool
safety.
Advanced Beginners:
(30 minutes) - Areas covered include reviewing and refining beginner
strokes, deep water acclimation, endurance, treading water, and
instruction in water safety.
Pre-Intermediate:
(45 minutes) - Areas covered include: front crawl (form), backstroke
(form), sidestroke, sculling crawl (10 ft), underwater swimming, change of
direction, 2 minute swim and water safety.
Swim Team: (2007 cost is $25 per
participant)
The Recreation Department's "Rip Tide" Swim Team is part of the Community
Swim League and competes against the teams from Crestwood Lake, Ridgewood and Wyckoff. The swim team is open to all Fair Lawn
children and no try-outs are involved. Practices are held weekday mornings
with meets held on Monday and Thursday evenings. Swimmers are required to
be members of Walsh/Memorial Pools and are required to purchase a team
swimsuit, which will be available for fitting at the parents/participants
orientation held in mid-June. Registration is held during pool pre-sale
hours. The "Riptide" is sponsored in part by the P.B.A. Local #67.
Life Guarding
Certification Course:
This program is for anyone age 15 and up who is interested in becoming a
certified lifeguard. This course consists of 2 hours of text book work and
one hour of water instruction each day with our certified teacher. After
completion of the course, you will be required to take a final written
exam and swim exam. We do not guarantee a passing grade. Swimsuits must be
brought every day and no absences are allowed any day. **Pre-requisite for
this class are Standard First Aid and C.P.R. certification (which this
course provides if needed) and a preliminary skills test given by our
instructor. The preliminary skills test includes swimming 500 yards, 2
minute water tread, 10 foot deep dive, a 10 pound weight retrieval and the
ability to perform the front crawl, backstroke, sidestroke and
breaststroke. A maximum of 12 participants are allowed per class. You must
be a pool member to participate.
Sand Castle Sculpture
Contest:
This free contest will be held on the beach at Memorial Pool on July 29,
2007.
Participants fill out the registration form and return it to secure their
spot on the beach. Contestants are given a 20' x 20' section of beach to
build thei castle or sculpture. Contestants can use shovels, spoons,
spatulas, etc. to construct or design their entry. The Sand Castle Contest
is divided into several different divisions: Individual over 16,
Individual under 16, groups under age 16 and groups over age 16.
Construction time is from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Judging will be from 11:30
AM to 12:00 noon with the winners being announced at noon. Registration is
limited. This program is co-sponsored by Dr. Charles Knapp, D.D.S.
Beach Volleyball:
This popular new sport can be played on the back beach or sand area on the
far side of Memorial Pool. It can be played by young and old alike and can
be competitive or recreational in nature. Particpants must be pool members
and play must be held during pool hours.
Walsh Pool:
Walsh Pool is located on Harristown Road in Fair Lawn next to the Dobrow
Sports Complex. This facility has a new lifeguard, first aid rooms and new
bathrooms inside the All-Sports building. Walsh Pool, surrounded by beach
sand and shade trees, also hosts a new multi-purpose playground apparatus.
Two small fountains are available for children to play in at the low water
area. Since eating is permitted at Walsh Pool, it is the perfect setting
for family picnics. All other memberships and pool rules apply.
