Dear Friends:
It's been a tough several days here in Fair Lawn. We all learned last
weekend about the untimely passing of Recreation Director George Frey.
George has touched everybody in town in one way or another. He not only
headed up Fair Lawn's broad scope of recreational activities with the utmost
skill, but was also an incredibly caring and warm person who had everyone's
admiration, love and respect.
I've had the privilege of working closely with George over the last few
months in putting together the Community Center's concert series. George has
been hands-on in attending to myriad details and working to make sure that
the series is going to be successful. In fact, he was working hard on
publicity and numerous other aspects of this weekend's Gandalf Murphy show
even before the first concert with Girlyman took place last month.
So...the show goes on. The concert this Saturday with Gandalf Murphy and the
Slambovian Circus of Dreams is definitely happening, and everyone is
pitching in to make it a top-quality evening of entertainment. (I even
understand that our borough manager and CFO will be manning the refreshment
tables at intermission!) While this is not an official memorial concert, I
would like to dedicate this show to George and all he has done over the
years to bring enjoyment to the people of Fair Lawn. Gandalf Murphy rocks
hard, but the band's music is also positive and uplifting in a way that we
could all use right now.
The events of the past week remind us that life is something to be savored
and enjoyed every day, so I hope you will join us in an evening of music and
good times this Saturday.

"Imagine a band that has mixed 25 years of rock and roll with a dash of folk
and a pinch of Americana into an enormous caldron over a blazing fire. Stir
it all with creativity and season with talent. The result is the sound of a
yesterday long forgotten, and a refreshing revival of what made you listen
to music in the first place." - Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Reviewiew
"Gandalf Murphy's repertory is filled with lively songs that are imbued with
mystical stirrings and idealism suggestive of the 1960's." - The New York
Times
